Whitley Map

Bounded to the north and east by a ridge of high ground carrying the road to Shinfield, Whitley is one of the larger suburbs of Reading, Berkshire. To the west lie the valleys of the River Kennet and Foudry Brook, while the southern edge fades into an ill-defined boundary with the neighbouring suburb of Whitley Wood. Historically a hamlet outside the Reading borough limits, Whitley fell within the parish of the church of St Giles in Reading before eventually being absorbed into the town.

Roads, Rail and Business

The former main road to Basingstoke passes just west of Whitley’s centre, drawing a line between largely residential areas to its east and an industrial zone to its west. The current A33 relief road to Basingstoke runs further west still, with a parallel railway line alongside it. Between the relief road, Bennet Road and the railway lies the Green Park business park and the Madejski Stadium, both relatively recent additions to this part of south Reading.

Local Government and Elections

The Borough of Reading handles all local government for Whitley. The suburb spans parts of the Katesgrove and Redlands wards within the Reading Central parliamentary constituency, as well as parts of the Church ward and the whole of the Whitley electoral ward within the Earley and Woodley parliamentary constituency. Whitley ward borders Coley, Katesgrove, Church and Southcote wards, along with parts of the Wokingham local government district. Three councillors represent the ward on Reading Borough Council, with elections held by thirds in three years out of every four. Labour Party candidates won each contest in 2016, 2018 and 2019.
